Affiliate marketing, what it is and can it really produce the income several website out there promise?

I look forward to a little extra income to make. My wife is unemployed, I have two kids and a halt job. If this method can bring me $ 300 - $ 500 per month more, I would invest in affiliate marketing. If most of these claims are fraudulent, please let me know or if you know how the results as advertised please send me a link with a guide or a suggested site to read, produce. Thanks in advance! One last thing, if this method is completely wrong, please enlighten me with a little help others who can. Thanks again!
