How do people make money from home doing affiliate marketing? How do they find out what products they can sell for someone else? How do they generate web traffic? How hard is all of this? Is a home-based business only meant for a very few select group of people?

This is a rather funny question. Not silly, funny. Because even those who are already making money with affiliate marketing are still asking the same question.

It’s like martial arts. If you ask the instructor how he got so good, he’d probably tell you to answer your own question after two years.

There are many approaches. And I will discuss some not as an expert but as a seasoned newbie.

I’ve been studying affiliate marketing for over a year now. I made my first sale in my first month. That was luck. Since then, and for almost 6 months, I never made a sale. Then it started improving. I have no significant average, but I have made my first $100. Mincemeat.

First you decide on what niche market to engage in. I am in a very competitive niche, the make money online niche. I still have to get to trying less competitive niches which I just can’t make a choice right now.

Anyway, I made my first sale through an old blog where a visitor clicked on an affiliate banner. Back then, I never knew about advertising as I thought traffic would just come naturally. I was wrong.

Some affiliate marketers, after choosing a niche, would look for affiliate programs relevant to that niche. Then they would choose products or services to promote. Even if they don’t have their own websites, they would write informative articles related to their chosen niches and submit these articles to article directories.

At article directories, their articles would have their signatures which have links to the sales pages of the affiliate products they are promoting.

The Internet is basically about information. When a potential buyer searches for information, search engines usually show web pages or articles they have indexed which are relevant to search terms used.

What affiliate marketers do is use keywords in their articles to match the search terms being used by people in their chosen niches. Because of the match, the chances that their articles get read are better.

After reading a good article, a potential buyer may be interested in checking out the link in the author’s signature. Once the affiliate sales page is reached, a possible sale can happen, and the author/affiliate marketer earns a commission.

Search engines love reviews of products and services, and so do buyers. Many affiliate marketers are quick to act when there is a hot product. They usually race to get a . com domain and use the name of the product plus the word review as domain name and put up a review site, with their affiliate links of course.

For long-term profit, affiliate marketers build contact lists. They usually do this by creating a squeeze page site where they offer free gifts to entice visitors to submit names and email addresses in exchange. Then they try to nurture good relationships with their list members.

Marketers with fairly large lists, say 100K members, can repeatedly promote products to their lists. If they have a salable product, say with a commission of $10 each sale, and they sold only 1,000 units, they make $10,000. If they have a million members, well, you can tell.

To drive traffic or visitors to their articles, websites and squeeze pages, affiliate marketers usually use a number of marketing methods. Foremost of these is search engine optimization or SEO.

A free Blogger blog I know, which is often #1 on page 1 of Google search has great SEO. It gets around 5,000 visitors a day and averages $3,000 a month from Google AdSense alone. Other marketers pay the owner just to have their ads displayed at his blog.

The AdSense ads we see at search results and in websites are usually the advertisements of affiliate marketers using pay-per-click or cost per impression marketing.

There are many other methods, but it takes time, patience and persistence to really get good at this.

I only use free marketing methods. My performance is improving, but I still have a lot to learn.

you find a product you beleive in and you drive traffic and sell it for something else. There are tons of places to find products. You can go online and choose something you enjoy and contact an internet company and see if it has an affiliate program. They are becoming very easy to find. Generating traffic is quite a trick but you might do a search for “traffic exchange” as that is one method. It seems really difficult and takes a lot of patience and testing and will frustrate you to no end. However, the minute you finally make your first sale, you will be hooked and it’s all down hill from there. A home business is made for anyone but you have to treat it as a business to succeed. Affiliate programs are the first choice of most newcomers to net earnings because they have many advantages:

1. All you have to do is to join a merchant program as an affiliate and send visitors to the merchant site

2. All other work such as making a sale, delivering the product or service, receiving payment, attending to the complaints or making a refund, is handled by the merchant site.

3. The merchant site also sees to it that you are paid commission when a sale is made through your efforts.

4. You are also rewarded when a sale is made through the efforts of an affiliate referred by you to the merchant site.

All easy and simple. But most affiliates soon find that in spite of their best efforts they are not making any money.

This is because the affiliate earnings depend not on how many visitors they send to the merchant site, but how many of them buy the product or service of the merchant.

So just sending visitors to the merchant site is not enough.
You can do this easily by joining traffic exchange or autosurf programs. Your merchant site will be seen hundreds of times but it will not make a sale. This is because these visitors are not interested in your site. They are looking at it to earn credits so they can show their site to others.

This is not to say that traffic programs have no use at all.
I have used them successfully to build my downline in free-to-join programs, but have never made a sale through them. Most members of such programs are promoting their own programs. They could get interested in joining other opportunities, but would rarely go for a product themselves.

So if you want to earn from affiliate programs, the thing to do is to send interested visitors to your merchant site.

Who is an interested visitor?
This is the visitor who reached your site by himself. He is looking for the product you are promoting. This is why he took the trouble of finding it from a search engine or from the particular kind of ads or forums.

This visitor is red hot for a sale. He is already interested in your product. If he finds what he wants on your merchant site, he is very much likely to look at the product’s features, mentally compare it with other similar products, ask for more information by giving his email address. All this can lead to a sale and a commission for you.

How to target interested visitors
The best way to reach interested visitors is promoting your products through search engines submissions, placing catchy ads, posting in forums or through your own website.

This may sound daunting to newcomers at first but all these are do-able with a little effort. You can get help for mastering all these skills from the resources freely available on the internet.

Joining right affiliate programs can also help a good deal to gain affiliate mastery. While great many affiliate programs give you a few text ads and banners and be done with you, there are some programs that give valuable training to succeed.

Be positive
Most newcomers to internet earning fail because they expect to be rich in a week, if not overnight. When this doesn’t happen as it rarely does in real life, they get discouraged. They are also influenced by others who like them tried but failed to earn with affiliate programs. The result — they give up, frustrated.

The reality is that nobody becomes rich overnight in internet marketing. You have to work at it consistently. Most important of all, banish negative thinking from your life and believe that if others have succeeded, you, too, can and will.

That perhaps is the most important ingredient for your success.

Small consistent effort over long periods of time! It really is that simple. Pick a method do something every day 1-2 hours a day 20 days a month and in 6 months from now you making a few thousand per month!
