Affiliate Program Marketing – Doing Your Market Research

by Jeremy Reeves | 30th September 2009

Now that many people’s finances are getting even tighter due to the recession, the idea of making money online is getting even more attractive, and one of the first things many people hear about is something called “affiliate marketing.” While there is a enough information out there to overwhelm most people at first, the basic concept is fairly simple.

Step one in the process is market research.

You need to find out what your potential buyers are looking for online, in order to define which market you will enter. To begin this, very important, process you need to do “keyword research”. This involves finding the specific words and phrases that people enter into the search engines in order to find solutions to their problems. You will be sure to regret it if you skip this important research step.

You will increase your website and landing pages page rank by finding and using keywords that buyers are regularly entering into the search engines. This will lead to a nonstop flow of organic (free), targeted traffic.

While keyword research may sound difficult, it doesn’t have to be. Google provides a free keyword tool (just search for “google keyword tool external” to find it) to search for the keyword or phrase that you enter to describe the product or niche you would like to promote as an affiliate.

Click on “get keyword ideas” to generate a list of keywords and gauge the competitiveness of the the market by taking a look at the number of times people are searching for your main keywords per month.

You are looking for a market that already has demand and competition, has a good number of products available to promote and yet has not so much competition that it would be too difficult to rank for.

What’s important here is that you remember there must be an audience for whatever you choose to market. Since you are an affiliate, your costs for entering a market are not very high, but it’s still a good idea to take the time to do niche research in order to avoid wasting your time
