Learn How To Turn Leads Into Prospects

by Dawna Miller | 10th January 2010

Some business owners think they can advertise a little and customers will come running. It takes more than that. No matter what type of business you have, you need to learn how to turn leads into prospects. Whether you have an Internet business or store, a physical retail shop, a phone sales company, or even just an informational website, read on for tips to convert leads!

Know your business. If you want to convert leads, you need to understand every aspect of your customer base. Who is buying? What are they buying? Once you identify these things, you will know your target market. Focus all your marketing efforts on that target customer and you will automatically get a higher lead-to-prospect ratio! This is because you will be putting all your energy into the people who are most likely to buy from you.

Ask a lot of questions. Do you really know what your customer wants? Are you sure? You need to be sure. More importantly, you need to know why a lead did not buy from you. There are many tools for this; phone calls, surveys, newsletter polls, and postcards for example. Once you find out what they need, be prepared to let them know exactly how your products or services can help them.

Offer options. Some leads will be financially strained or cautious. If you have services and products in a wide range, everyone will be able to sample what you have to offer at a level that is comfortable for them. Give them a chance to sign up for your newsletter or joining your social networking fan page. Do whatever you can to keep the lead connected to your business!

Change your game plan. Keep your business fresh by trying something new. A new promotion or sale, a new product or service, maybe even a special event! The point is to have something exciting to present to potential prospects. If they are a real lead, there is some interest there. If they are not converting over to prospects, maybe your new item or event will be just the thing to get them to purchase.

Follow up. People are literally assaulted by advertisements. They are under constant demand for their money and time. It can be difficult, but you need to keep your business in their minds. Again, newsletters are a good tool (even if they do not read them, your business name is in front of their face). Advertise locally or send postcard mailings regularly. It often takes more than five hits to convert a lead to a prospect.

Keep records. Keep track of everything you do in terms of marketing. Keep all marketing materials you send out in a folder, along with sales records for that same time period. You can get your click through and open rates from your email marketing company (the company that sends out email newsletters). What this does is help you identify what is working and what you need to do to convert more leads.

It is definitely not easy. But neither is running successful business! Put the necessary time and effort in and you will see your leads become prospects in no time!
