While the four options described are indeed the most prevalent methods, all have one common strength, which is also perhaps their greatest weakness (/cliche). It's their focus on "volume" - getting the message out to a majority, with as little manual attention as possible. While this is can be great "bang for the buck", it means none of them are as effective, per customer, as the "personal touch" at driving the marketing message toward an ultimate "sale".
We developed a site (http://www.hopeyoudontmind.com) for the very reason that we think there's still room for that personal touch in today mass-market environment. It combines twitter search with personalised replies, audio alerts and color-coding to create a "customer just walked into my store" approach to marketing. I think this definitely leads to stronger relationships with customers, and hence that coveted "word of mouth" impact.
