There are two types of SEO, onsite and offsite. Onsite involves optimizing your website to make it search engine friendly. By changing your local site and adding special SEO components you can attract better results, and sometimes great results from search engines like Google.

You can get great results with just onsite optimization on its own but the effects tend to be unstable and not effective continuing. To get top results you will need to do a lot off offsite optimization as well.

Top onsite SEO tip: change the page title

Believe it or not the changing the page title is one of the most powerful onsite optimization techniques you can do. The page title is what appears at the top of a web browser on the left hand side. Visitors to your website will not commonly take much notice of your page title because it is not shown on your page. However, search engines take a lot of notice of the page title.

If you have never seen what a <title?</title? tag looks like within an HTML page then simple open up the page source and take a look at the top of the page. To view the page souce, the simplest way is to right click on the page and select view source.

You will find the page title within the <title?</title? tags usually within the first few lines of the HTML code. This is an example of an HTML title tag : <title?This is my page title</title?.

Search engines are very focused on page titles because it is like the title of a book - it tells you what is inside. By paying close attention to the page title you can move your ranking up considerably. The other day we could not get a client to rank for a specific keyword - we had missed adding this into the title (we are ranking clients for many keywords) and then the next day after we got the page reindexed by Google they moved from the second page to the first.

The trick is to make the page title 100% of your keyword or as close to that as possible. The more extra words, other than your keyword(s), that you have, will dilute the effectiveness. Focus is everything in the world of SEO.

For example, avoid doing this: <title?Earth Worms in the Middle East</title? when your keyword is earth worms. Alternatively simply use: <title?Earth Worms</title?.

If you have multiple keywords only use 2 or 3 uttermost or again the focus is reduced. If you are using multiple keywords then do it like this: <title?Earth worms | Middle East</title? - never use filler words like 'in' and 'the'.

Tips To Enhance WordPress Search Engine Optimisation

WordPress out of the box allows fundamental management of the main SEO meta information. To extend the functionality we add our own super-charged version of the All-In-One-SEO Pack. The SEO pack makes it simple to change the page title and page meta description.

The All-In-One-SEO Pack is a great WordPress plugin that finishes off the SEO aspects for WordPress. For some reason WordPress still has not got the SEO fixed out of the box.

The All-In-One-SEO Pack allows you you to change the most significant page elements - page title and page description. It also allows you to modify the page keywords, but as we all know, search engines no longer take note of these because they have been spammed too much in the past. Google stopped using the keywords for page ranking in the early 2000's.

Page Title HTML tags

This is the No1 SEO component to manipulate. Constantly make sure that you manipulate the page title. The page title appears in the browser window at the very top of the screen. Search engines use this in the listings and show it in their search results.

Ideally the page title comprises only of appropriate keywords and nothing else. To make the text more human readable then we often add a pipe character (

Just like with a book the page title of an HTML page is the most significant element. Never leave this element to chance. Make sure you use keywords in the title.

If your page needs to extend to cover 2 or 3 keywords we have learned that you can still get solid rankings from adding multiple keywords to the title. However, always try to make the page title as close to the keyword you want to rank for. Adding extra non-beneficial words detracts from the results achieved.

Even though it is best to keep the page title just to the keywords you want to rank for, if you are a branded business you will also most likely want to add in your business name so that it shows up on Google in your listing.

Page Descriptions

This element is NOT used by search engines for ranking purposes. However, most search engines will utilize this in their search results so it is important. Google does not use the description all the time but we find that it uses it about 80-90% of the time. The rest of the time it will pick up the first piece of text on the page.

By having a good description it will increase your click through rates because the text will be more engaging to people. Ensure that you use a maximum of 156 characters. If you use any more characters Google will cut short the rest. If you can keep your descriptions to 140 characters or less this is even better seeing Google sometimes adds a date to the start of the description which is part of the 156 characters it displays.

At the bottom of every page and post you will find the meta tags plugin details. Update the details appropriately. Note: If you can only use see the title for the plugin and no details, just click the title and the section will expand.
