1. Make sure search engines can find your website by putting your chosen keywords into the title of your website. These tags are found at the top of the website between the head tags. The chances of getting targeted traffic to your site greatly increase with this step.

The title should contain text that people can relate to, as it's this that will show up in the search result. You should treat it like a headline.

2. Use the same keywords as the anchor text to link one page from your website to another. This is more useful if you have a large website, and the more links you can get the better.

3. Make sure the text in the title tag appears in the text of your website. Search engine roberts will prefer this as it ensures your title is relevant to the content in the site.

Also when writing the body of your website, use your keywords once or twice. You can bold them to make them stand out or highlight them. Use them in some of the subheadings too.

4. Make sure you change the title tags on each of your websites. If search engines scan your website and see that it's got the same title it may think all the pages are the same and therefore may not index the site.

5. Many website novices place too much attention on the metatags - these simply are not as important today as they once were. Only use two or three targeted keywords here... too many will dilute your website and can actually harm your ranking.

6. Do not link to link-farms or other search engine unfriendly neighborhoods.

7. Do not use doorway pages. Doorway pages are designed for robots only, not humans. Search engines like to index human friendly pages which contain content which is relevant to the search.

8. I alway ensure I have a contacts page and terms of use page on my website. Not only does this look more professional to users but search engines also like this!

9. Make sure every image on your website is described using the alt tags. This will help search engines that index images to find your pages and will also help readers who use text only web browsers.

10. When submitting your website to search engines to so personally - don't use software or other submission services to do it for you as this could result in your website being penalised or banned.

Are Backlinks Vital for SEO?

Anyone who has looked into getting their website optimised for search engines will more than likely have come across the term backlink. A backlink is a found on other people's websites, and are hyperlinks that link back to your website. Search engines look for these backlinks to determine the relevance of a website. The example usually used to highlight the importance of backlinks is the search term "click here". If you look in google or yahoo for this term you'll no doubt find Acrobat Reader at No 1. So how can it rank so highly for a keyword term that is of no obviously relevance?

Take a look on the Acrobat Reader site... Serch for the term click here. I don't think it even appears once on their site, but the reason Google thinks this is the most relevant page for that keyword is because millions of websites all over the world have a backlink to this site with the anchor text of "click here". Search engines therefore deduce that Acrobat Reader's site has to be the most relevant for this search term.

What makes a good backlink?

So now you have seen that search engines use backlinks, so what makes a good backlink? Well, a backlink from a website that Google trusts is far more important than a backlink from a website that Google doesn't trust. Therefore, backlinks from websites with a higher page rank are more important. If you can get a backlink from a website like Wikipedia for example, this would be considered a lot better than from a website that Google doesn't know about.

Google also considers the quantity of backlinks, although this may not be as important as quality. The truth is, nobody really knows the Google algorithm.

In addition to quality and quantity of backlinks, the website that a backlink comes from should be relevant to the website its pointing at. For example, if someone puts a backlink on a car auction website that points to a travel company, the two websites are not relevant to each other so Google will put less weight behind the link.

How do you get backlinks?

Backlinks can be generated by blogging and writing articles where you put in the resource box at the end a couple of backlinks. Additionally you can buy backlinks or ask other website owners to post a couple on their website. By ignoring backlinks you will be at a significant disadvantage and will probably not rank well in Google. But by getting a lot of backlinks you can do very well and even end up on Googles first page of results.
