Sony has recently announced that it will be converting ebooks sold in its ebook store to the ePub open format instead of its current proprietary BBeB LRF format. The ePub format is supported by an increasing number of publishers and ebook readers. This is good news in that hopefully someday we will have an open ebook format that will work across most or all ebook readers. In a perfect eworld any ebook we buy at any store would work on any ereader.

Unfortunately, it's not time to break out the Champaign just yet. Sony's ebooks will still have DRM, thanks to Adobe Content Server. Currently there are 17 ereaders that are compatible with Adobe's system. Something that is not compatible: Mobipocket DRM. Bebook owners who update to the August 2009 firmware which adds compatibility to Adobe Digital Editions are finding that they can no longer read Mobipocket DRM'ed files on their readers, rendering any previously purchased titles in that format useless. This is because Amazon, which owns Mobipocket, doesn't at this time permit Mobi DRM to co-exist on the same device with other DRM systems. Hopefully Amazon will change this.

Nevertheless, Sony's announcement is a direct shot over Amazon's bow, and a brilliant strategic move. Will Amazon maintain its current fortress mentality, locking Kindle users into buying their ebooks primarily from Amazon, and not opening the Kindle ebook store to users of ebook readers other than the Kindle? A couple of years ago when Amazon opened their music download store, they played the part of the liberator; so it is ironic that they now find themselves on the opposite side of a similar battle. In fact, Amazon's Jeff Bezos has dropped hints in the past that there are plans to make Kindle books available to other brands of ebook readers.

What would the effects be if Amazon decided tomorrow to match Sony's move? Personally, I think it would be beneficial for Amazon and the Kindle ebook store, and most definitely good for ereader owners of all stripes. Most of the negative comments that I've seen about the Kindle specifically (vs. ebook readers in general - i.e. people who can't imagine a device replacing a dead tree book) have to do with the closed format. I think Amazon would gain a lot of new converts if they made the Kindle more open.

If we were no longer forced to buy our ebooks from specific sellers, but could choose to purchase from any number of ebook stores and still expect the title to be readable from whichever device we happen to have, how would it change the way that ebook stores compete?

• Brand Loyalty: Both Sony and Amazon have their devotees.

 

• Price: Traditionally, product competition by price usually leads to price erosion - good for consumers in the short term, but maybe in the long run less product to choose from as producers go out of business or are consolidated. When it comes to ebooks though, the publishers will probably be able to draw the bottom line. What would happen to bestsellers for $9.99? Reportedly Amazon looses money on a lot of these, as they have to pay the publishers more than that. There would obviously be no reason for a loss leader program like this if you do not need to buy a Kindle to read them. Perhaps Amazon would continue to subsidize bestsellers for registered Kindle owners?

 

• The Shopping Experience: Which ebook store is the easiest and most intuitive to use? I think Amazon is a clear winner here, but that's just my opinion.

Finally, where would a Sony matching move by Amazon leave Barnes & Noble? They are obviously hoping to position themselves as the main Kindle alternative when the Plastic Logic reader comes out early next year. I'm not sure at all if that boat would still float. B & N's ebook store is also built around a proprietary format and DRM; reportedly even DRM'ing free public domain books.

Well I prefer it to Paypal but Paypal is still insanely popular but it's not as good as Google Checkout or Moneybookers which for me are cheaper on the credit card transactions. To sum up, it is a good payment processor but not for credit cards.

Lately, reading through numerous SEO and affiliate marketing news, I came across an interesting SEO service called RankPay. Maybe you have heard of it, there has been some buzz around it. They offer a risk-free proposal, if you don’t rank then you don’t pay. That’s something revolutionary itself, I’ve yet to come across a legitimate SEO company that offers such claims.

I’ve just started to work with RankPay on some of my domains. For this blog itself I have booked top rankings for the keyword "internet marketing tools". We will see, how my rankings with this keyword evolves. I will give it a test shot for 6 months.

I think, RankPay is a great way to get top rankings, without having to worry about the daily inconveniences of rankings and linkbuilding. If you don’t seriously know what you are doing, I recommend that leave it to an SEO service to manage your SEO campaign.

Affiliate programs can be an effective tool to use on your blog or website earn extra money for you. But it is important to choose the right affiliate program based on the nature and content of your site and one that offers the most earning potential.

To understand how affiliate programs pay, it helps to know a few terms first:

* Customer: A customer is someone that clicks through from your website to to another website (a merchant site) from yours. A customer may or may not have to make a purchase for you to be paid depending on the terms of the affiliate program.

* Merchant: The merchant is the business that that you generate sales, click-throughs, or leads for. Simply put, merchants are the businesses that you are making money or generating business opportunities for.

* Affiliate: In an affiliate program, you are considered the affiliate (or you may also be referred to as an "associate").

Types of Affiliate Programs

The three most common financial arrangements affiliate programs offer are:

1. Pay-per-lead: Affiliates are paid a fee for each customer they refer to a merchant site that completes some sort of information query. Information gathered from lead generations may be used by the merchant site itself, or sold to another party.

In all fairness to your own site visitors, you should offer a disclaimer that the information they provide in a lead query is captured and could be sold to someone else.

2. Pay-per-sale: The merchant site pays the affiliate when a customer referred by the affiliate makes an actual purchase. Pay-per-sale programs may offer a flat fee for each sale, or a percentage based on a variety of factors, or even a combination of flat rate and percentage payments.

This is the most reliable way to earn income from affiliate programs. It is easy to track what people are buying, how much you are earning, and make adjustments in your affiliate program ads to maximum selling potential.

3. Pay-per-click: A merchant pays you for every click from your site to the merchant site whether or not a sale results. This may sound like an easy way to make money but it is not. Unless you have very high traffic to your site, this is not an effective tool to use and may actually detract from the quality of your own website.

There are many flaws in the pay-per-click system and even Google was sued in a class action lawsuit for misleading advertisers by deliberately using “parked websites” to create an illusion of the number of paid ads being placed, and for failing to disclose click-through information on customer bills, thereby inflating AdSense profits for Google.

Merchants are often targeted by individuals who sit and click repeatedly from their own sites or ask family and friends to click for them – people who have no intention of ever buying anything. This practice is unethical and unfair to other business owners.

If a merchant believes you are artificially inflating click-throughs or using automated methods to increase clicks they have the right to refuse to pay you anything at all.

Affiliate programs should be used as a business tool, not as a substitute for a business. If you work hard to create a blog or website that offers something of value to your own site visitors, you are far more likely to earn income by using affiliate programs.

4. Be Prepared to Work for Your Affiliates: If your affiliate's ads are not working well on a page or section of your website, move them, change them, or remove them. Affiliate programs will drop you if your site is not performing for them.
