A longer term keyword may signal they are ready to purchase, depending on what industry you are in.

3. Grammatical Tips: Keep your sentences as straightforward as you can. Please don’t be tempted to “impress” your readers with big words. They won’t be impressed and will move on quicker than you can type monosyllable. Short is sweet. Long paragraphs mean readers will leave you quicker than rats from a sinking web ship. Keep it short. Like that.

4. Onsite Tips: Don’t call your website something clever. Cooking Up A Storm may be a clever name for a main street cookery shop, but for an online version it could be a disaster. Who’s going to search for that? Integrate your keywords into the domain name of your site. If you’ve already set up a site, and your brand name doesn’t elude to the subject matter of your site, try integrating keywords in your URL. In addition don’t forget the obvious spots: Meta Title, Meta Description, H1-5 Tags, internal links from other pages, and image ALT tags.

5. Register Your Site: It’s important to register your site with each of the search engines, and upload your sitemap. In addition try adding your company to directories like DMOZ.org: a free directory, Yahoo directory ($299/annually), Business.com ($299/annually), BOTW ($99/annually), and if you have a blog submit it to Google News.

While the above ‘secrets’ aren’t exactly new, they do provide you with some great insight into how to help make your onsite content get indexed, cached, and found by potential customers and clients.

People still try to repeat the keyword phrase a set number of times to make sure a search bot will understand it. Naturally, on unique quality content. But in order not to sound too general here are a few tips for you to optimize your pages for search engines (and still appeal to people):

Tip #1: Include your key phrase in the page title and H1 tag (headline);

Tip #2: Add the page text summary (or introduction) in the very beginning of the web page mentioning your key phrase;

Tip #3: Use only grammatically correct phrases (we know people tend to use short phrases that are not always correct and you can come across such word combinations while doing your keyword research but don’t use them, don’t make your pages look too “seoish”);

Tip #4: Use your keyword synonyms (If I were a search engine, I’d include synonyms as one of the parameter of the natural and useful content);

Tip #5: Use your keyword derived terms (that might mean more long-tail referral traffic and also make your content richer and more varied).

Make sure your page is “scannable” – the visitor will immediately get an idea what it is about (add bold fonts, lists and headlines). And yes, you should use your key phrase (or related terms) in headlines and bolded text (so that both people and bots could quickly associate the page with them).

The search engines don’t care about people’s link-building tactics all that much – until they become scalable and spammers start polluting their results.  They do care about their results.

As article spinning scripts are being increasingly used, there will be a tipping point where Google and other search engines will have to counteract. (Just an assumption based on other link-building techniques that reached scalability in the past).  Who knows – maybe we have already reached that tipping point.

1. When spinning your article, first thing you need to do is to spin your title. Some people will argue that what I recommend doing with an article’s title isn’t exactly spinning, but more rewriting.  Semantics.  The highest quality spin is to write everything from scratch, but it is probably not practical to go that far if you plan to submit to hundreds of article directories.

The title is the most important part of the article to make unique, as it often appears in:

• <title> tags
• in a page’s URL
• in <H> tags
• in internal links to the page

This is the one place where it is probably worth your while to sit down and write 100 options from scratch, trying for many variations of style.

Using permutations of titles can help you a long way in writing unique article titles.

2. The second most important part of your article is the first sentence. So, you must spin the first sentence as well.

The first sentence is pretty important – sometimes it will also be used as a summary, so you might want to write 3 or 4 versions of it (or 12 or 13) in completely different styles…

3. Spinning paragraphs can also help you. Spin entire paragraphs. Take a paragraph, then rewrite it so that it is shorter. Then rewrite it so that it is two paragraphs or even three.  What this does is help change the structure of your article, which helps make it more unique (there I go mangling the English language again.)  Use some of the same wording if you are feeling rushed or lazy, but remember that the more you change the better.

At least once in your article, rewrite a long paragraph as a short paragraph followed by a bullet list. It helps to create a few versions of the list, changing the order of the bullets and even removing some of them in some versions and adding bullets in others. Bullet lists are often the easiest to play around with.

Remember, the overall aim is traffic, so even if it won’t always strictly benefit SEO it could still be worthwhile.

Nothing can hurt you more than duplicate content on the World Wide Web. So, do NOT duplicate content.

Do not post several pages with the same title and do not post same content on several pages. If you have two separate addresses to the same page, it will be taken as duplicate content.

Here are some places where duplicate content is likely to appear and must be avoided:

1. It is possible that the duplicate content may appear for product descriptions from manufacturers. Quiet often the publishers, distributors and affiliates reproduce the product description in large e-commerce sites. Consider that there are multiple vendors selling the same product, they are likely to use the same product description. This can lead to duplicate content on the web and cause indexing problems at search engines.
2. Some sites offer multiple versions of the same page like printer friendly format of web pages, etc. In such cases, it is advised that the site owner or the web administrator uses robots.txt for meta “noindex” tagging of these alternative pages. You must avoid search engines from indexing these alternative pages as this will otherwise be considered as duplicate content leading to inappropriate indexing of your web pages.
3. Oftentimes, sites URL include visitor information to track visitors as they go through the pages of a site. You must avoid this type of tracking information to be given to search engine crawling programs. The visitor information within the URLs may lead to indexing of the same page under different URLs, repeatedly and causing duplicate content issues for your website.
4. If you duplicate the content from one to another page, it may create the risk that some of your pages don’t get indexed by search engines, or are filtered out of search results. If you use different sub-domains and different top level domains for your website, it will be better to create different brands altogether.

Google Webmaster Guidelines explicitly mention that you must not create multiple pages, domain or sub domains with similar or duplicate content.

Watch out for duplicate content for your website!

You can employ several ways to get visitor traffic to your website. However, not all the traffic may be of “good quality”. Even if you have a high hit count, it is really not useful if the visitors do not stick around on your website for a while. It is NOT the numbers that really matter!

Targeted Traffic: In order to get good quality traffic, you really need to attract the “right” kind of visitors - people who are really interested in your site’s topic, people who are more likely to benefit from your site’s content/products, people who may even contribute to your website by purchasing your product or posting comments, or the people who may refer your product or may talk about your website with others. Thus, you need to have “targeted traffic” for the success of your website.

Using Targeted Keywords for Targeted Traffic

Targeted Traffic is focused on target-oriented user activity on the website. You may improve targeted traffic using specific keywords instead of broad keywords with high competition. Long tail keywords can also help in raking higher for less competitive keywords.

Specific Keywords: Using “specific” targeted keywords for your website help you attract targeted visitors who are interested in your web site's content and products. Specific keywords not only include the broad topic but also include keywords that describe the content of your website. While keyword research for your website, you must consider specific keywords instead of overly broad keywords with high competition.

For example, for a broad keyword like "cat", your site competes with many thousands of other sites for attention. However, the more targeted "cat house" or “cat food” phrase increase your chance of appearing near the top of the results list.

Long tail Keywords: Long tail keywords are used for targeting less-competitive niche markets rather than for the hugely competitive broad keywords. Using long tail keywords with less competition may help you rank higher on search engines easily.

For example, using long tail keyword like “home made cat food recipes” instead of “cat food” can get you more targeted traffic by ranking higher on search results.

Remember: Optimize your keywords, use specific and/or long tail keywords for targeted traffic!

Search engines employ software programs often called “Bots” or “Spiders” to crawl and find new sites, mostly by following links from the sites that are already known. Thus, search engine spiders crawl and index web pages on the World Wide Web.

If a search engine spider has difficulty in “crawling” the links within your website, then your web pages either will only get partially indexed or will not get indexed at all. This will significantly impact your site’s ranking on the search engine.

Remember: Spiders are unable to follow very convoluted navigation menus.

Why are spiders not able to crawl my website? One of the reasons why spiders may not be able to follow your website is if your website has a complex and convoluted menu.

Search engine bots are prone to “traps” wherein complex URLs/multiple links pointing to each other or the same web page can hinder the spiders from crawling the website effectively.

Example 1: When the spiders are crawling URLs pointing to shopping cart software or content management systems, they are likely to encounter a lot of extra information in the web page URL. Multiple references to session ids or a large number of variables included in the URL can cause crawling issues.

Example 2: Another example is where a website has a large number of URL versions or several URLs redirect to display the exact same web page. In such a case, the spiders are unable to follow the links to multiple versions of the same web page which leads to poor crawling.

What should I do? Simple and short URLs are typically the easiest to crawl. So, you must try to use a content management system that produces short and clean URLs.

Additionally, you must strive to have simplified navigation across web pages, as little flash and graphical objects, and readable text with keywords for spiders to crawl easily. Using sitemaps can also help crawlers to identify and index your web pages.
