Putting In Too Many Keywords Won’t Get You SEO Domination

by Ace McGavin | 5th March 2010

Do you own a business, want to own a business, or dream of passive income? Then you have probably stumbled on the Internet as a way to do it. And you are probably learning that SEO is the holy grail of making money on the internet. If you give this a shot, you quickly learn that SEO is a must. But, hopefully after you read this, you'll see that keyword stuffing is not.

Keyword stuffing, if you didn't know, is inserting as many of your keywords into a web page as possible. You put them where ever you can so the search engines will find them and read them. For example, if I were promoting a Seattle DUI lawyer site I'd write "Seattle DUI attorney" "Seattle DUI defense attorney" "Seattle DUI lawyers" etc. until I had all the words I could think of.

But the search engines evolved because people started taking advantage of that aspect of search engine optimization. They began creating sites filled with nothing but keywords hoping they'd get picked up and placed at the top of the search results - and for a while they did.

Over time, these keyword stuffed pages began ranking high on search engine results, and the search engines started to get a little mad about that. You see, the search engines don't care who's on top. What they care about is when you search Seattle DUI lawyer you find a bunch of great information on Seattle DUI lawyers. Keyword stuffed pages weren't providing that experience. So something had to change.

What the search engines did was change the way they evaluated sites. Emphasis was still placed on the content of the site, but too many keywords in too short a span became a red flag for keyword stuffing. Not only was the content on a page like that not counted, it was actually penalized.

In the end, keyword stuffing not only doesn't help, it actually hurts. So, if you are new to the Internet search engine game, don't stuff keywords. It won't work. Instead make good content, put a few keywords here and there, and work on getting as many backlinks as possible.

I am a Seattle DUI lawyer that dabbles in SEO. If you're curious about SEO for your DUI attorney website, stay tuned for more helpful info.
