How To Make Your Boss Spend More On SEO
It remains a reality that SEO efforts are usually at the bottom of the list regarding budget size. Advertised links in search engines get much more focus from your boss, despite the fact that they don't get nearly as much attention from the people using these search engines. No, really: it's true: only around half of all Internet users look toward the right of the Google search results page, instead preferring to focus on the natural, organic results that appear on the left. Think about that for a moment, and how you might try convincing your boss of this fact.
Even more interesting is that of that full one hundred percent, only around half of them look below the sixth listing on the left side of the screen most of the time. This means that, at the end of the day, the hottest part of the results page is the top left side of the screen. This should be the most coveted position, the holy grail.
Then again, most of you reading this already knew that, didn't you? The trick is convincing your boss of this reality.
The task of convincing your employer can be quite a task. Not only is making him understand the benefits of SEO difficult, but getting him to act on this information and spend more on SEO efforts can be quite an uphill battle. What, then, is the best plan of attack?
With most business executives today being part of a generation that grew up before this digital revolution, it would be wise to avoid using too much technical jargon. Focus on what your boss is familiar with: the numbers, and how they correlate into a more cost-effective plan. As pictures are worth a thousand words, using them would be highly effective in getting your point across.
While pie charts and bar graphs are useful, you should think creatively about how you can use images to really get your point across. Use of a "Google Heat Map" is a good example of this, as it tells your boss everything a large list of numbers will, but in a more dynamic and easily understood way. Add excitement and a sense of urgency to your presentation, and try to play on his emotions (if he has any) as well as his razor sharp mind.
Talk a lot about the money, as you're employer as a natural interest in the finances of his company. Focus on the improved cost-effectiveness of a more SEO-centric plan.
Use everything at your disposal to turn the tide of this battle for a bigger SEO budget. In the end, your boss will thank you for it as he witnesses the increased traffic on his company's website and the improved sales numbers such traffic naturally causes.
